Beating the Post Bank Holiday Blues

After an extra long weekend it can be especially difficult to face the alarm clock and enthusiastically dive back into the rat race. Until you can plot a longer term escape getting some good, healthy scoff down your neck can help beat the moody Tuesday blues.

Did you know that certain foods can naturally increase levels of serotonin in the body? Serotonin or ‘the happy hormone’ is the neurotransmitter (or brain chemical) that regulates appetite, sleep and most importantly makes us feel good by boosting our mood. We can increase our levels of serotonin and put our mood in a happier place by eating foods which are rich in the amino acid (constituent of protein) Tryptophan. Tryptophan acts as a precursor to serotonin and foods high in tryptophan are often used therapeutically to help treat conditions like insomnia, depression and anxiety.

One of the best natural food sources of tryptophan is turkey. Carbohydrates also boost tryptophan levels in the brain, our favourite source is the humble potato. Why not try our Pesto Turkey Burgers for dinner alongside some Pimped Up Pesto Potatoes to give yourself a boost this Tuesday?
