I want to share some observations from client sessions this week.
I’ve seen three cases of low iron status that were told they were fine by their GP.
Many clients results might be within the reference ranges from their GP surgery because they are based on populations.
The references range I use to interpret tests are optimal not standard and based on age and gender so much more specific.
Despite that, three clients were told they were fine yet had ferritin below 15 ug/L.
Yet NHS states for adult females:
- <15 ug/L is consistent with absolute iron deficiency
- 15-29 ug/L is indicative of low body iron stores
- 30-99 ug/L: Indeterminate ferritin
- 100-310 ug/L: Normal ferritin
What’s frustrating is that this is easily corrected (but important to ascertain the cause) and makes a huge difference to fatigue.
It’s a similar case with hormones, blood counts, B12, HbA1c/blood glucose, cholesterol, BMI and more.
All these results require a degree of personalisation in terms of interpretation alongside an analysis of symptoms and lifestyle to obtain the necessary answers.
If your blood tests have come back fine but don’t feel fine you may benefit from a consultation to assess them along with your diet, lifestyle and supplements.
I provide single or multi-consult packages and you can find more details here.
