Hamish and I walked 28 miles last weekend.
Over cliff tops, beaches, sand dunes and through woodland.
It was heavenly.
I sang, danced, scrambled, waded and just stood in absolute awe.
Then we came home to snuggle on the sofa.
Contentment flooded our tired bodies.
Now I wouldn’t blame you for thinking… well it’s alright for you.
What a privilege to be able to do that.
And it absolutely is.
But the truth is these walks are part of a bigger journey for me.
They are restoring my mind and faith in my future.
That had been slowly deteriorating over the last few years with illness, work stress and life load.
Plus my “bad news” brain making some fictional and scary predictions.
This busy, distracted existence guided by fear created the perfect storm inside my body.
Thankfully this knocked me out of life for a while.
To recover I started getting out for long walks and doing regular meditations.
Slowly my eyes began to open to a different existence.
I could see a different perspective.
I regained a sense of something greater on the horizon which I was blind to for a very long time.
Longer hikes have also become my time to process, unravel and release decades of stressful experiences and negative emotions that I didn’t fully acknowledge or feel.
Every walk helps me reconnect with my (much wiser) gut and heart.
Contentment comes easier as the more I walk, the less I need in life.
I realise I have enough and I am enough.
It’s easier to stop the #needmore distraction with food, shopping, wine, scrolling, exercise and just stuff!
My walks can be 1 mile or many more but I always return feeling better, stronger, braver about decisions I need to make and more confident in my truth.
So these hikes are not a luxury they are essential… often medicinal.
I prioritise them more when life gets messy.
I encourage you all to do the same.
Whatever you’re battling, one of the best ways to find the solution is out on a trek.
The bigger the problem the greater the need to get walking.
